I first want to congratulate all our young Lewis artists for another incredible art night. I especially want to recognize the wonderful young Lewis musicians for all their hard work and great performances. This Friday we'll be having a Lewis Family Dance Night from 6:30 - 8:00 in the cafeteria. The event is a fundraiser for the 4th grade but is open to any and all who want to kick up their heels and dance the Virginia Reel and the Redwing. On Thursday, May 24th we will be having our annual Spring Concert featuring music from Recorder Club, Violin, Band, and The Boomin' Beats. Please mark your calendars. And if you have a young musician at home in one of these groups encourage them in their daily practice.

I sent out an email message with details of the event. If you didn't get that email, I've posted the letter I sent out on my website - http://1314.posterous.com/art-night-thursday-may-3rd  It's also available in my room if you need a hard copy. Violins are practicing after school on Monday and Wednesday. Band is rehearsing on Tuesday & Thursday. Recorder Club will meet before school as usual on Thursday. And the Boomin Beats are meeting during lunch recesses Monday - Thursday. With this last great push we'll be ready for Art Night.
On another note, I have to say just how proud I am of all our 4th and 5th grade drama and orchestra students. I was blown away by your work this year. And I for me this was one of the most joyous and memorable play that I've been a part of. Great, great work.

Last weekend was the annual Lewis Garden Fair, which has really blossomed into a great community event. The 4th Grade strings performed in the garden and they sounded great. This week there are the only performances of the Lewis Play "The Elves and Shoemaker". The performances are this Friday night and a Saturday matinee. Come see some amazing work from our 4th and 5th graders. Next week is Art night and all before & after school music groups will be performing. This week violin and band students are meeting during lunch recesses to get ready. Next week those groups will meet at there regular times after school.

There are some very big events on the horizon that I'd like to mention this week. On Saturday, April 21 is the 3rd Annual Lewis Garden Fair. Our talented 4th Grade Violin Group will be playing in the garden at noon. The following Friday, the Lewis Drama Club will be putting on two performances of "The Elves and the Shoemaker" on Friday & Saturday April 27 & 28. The Drama Orchestra, made up of 4th & 5th graders are working hard to develop music for the production. Then the following week on May 3rd is Lewis Art Night were Recorder, Violin, Band and Boomin Beats will be performing. I'll be sending out more information about Art Night next week.

The rains might have kept us indoors, but we still enjoyed a little family time. The break started on such a high note with our talented students showing what they can do in the Annual Lewis Talent Show. Now coming back, April looks to be a busy month preparing for three big school events. Violin and Booming Beats will be getting ready for Garden Fair performances on Saturday, April 21. I'll have flyers for kids to take home at their next meetings, and I'll also post the details of the performance on my blog. The Lewis Drama production ends the month with two performance of "The Elves and The Shoemaker" on Friday April 27, and Saturday April 28.  And the following week is Art Night, which features all four performing groups! This means that daily practice is very important. We can only do so much in our once or twice a week rehearsals. I know coming off of Spring Break and picking back up the routines of school can be tough, but getting back into a regular practice schedule will help prepare you for the up coming performances. As my bass teacher used to say, "You can't cram for a performance. It takes daily, constant, and hard work to perform music on stage. Do the work now so both you and your audience can enjoy it."

This week in Band we'll be working on page 16 of our books. I'll be introducing natural and flat symbols, along with pick-ups or anacrusis. We'll talk more about key signatures and even introduce 2 new notes. In violin on Wednesday after school, I'll be introducing a new song "Go Tell Aunt Rhody". I've already posted it on our Note Flight site (http://lewismusic.sites.noteflight.com) along with an instructional video. In Recorder Club the past two weeks we've been working on the "Rain Forest Song", but this week we'll be trying our fingers out on Wakilah. With both Boomin Beats on Friday and the Drama Orchestra on Mondays it's busy after school in the music room!

Staring next week, March 6, all 5th grade band students will meet both Tuesdays and Thursdays. This schedule will continue until the end of May. With the school play beginning production this week, violin players will who are also in the play will need to come either on a free Wednesday after school, or during lunch recess on either Monday or Wednesday. I'll be talking with violin students this week to set up a schedule. I'll also begin a special play orchestra group. I'll be talking with kids about this group this week and next week.

While reading music is complicated, it's not nearly as complicated as learning to read words. Still seeing all those little black symbols on a page and trying to make sense of things can be overwhelming. One way we break this down is to divide reading rhythms from reading pitches. So in the past couple of weeks we've been focused on reading & identify pitch name on the treble clef staff. While there are many methods and approaches out there, I've stumbled upon one this year that really seems to be working well with most students. It's an online drill generator. You can access this drill from my website http://1314.posterous.com/pages/music-theory Or if you have an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch you download their app, Tenuto on the iTunes App Store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tenuto/id459313476?mt=8

The two are more figuratively then actual, as the songs we are exploring mention these two senses. 2nd Graders are exploring the movement of snow flakes and taking on the challenge of cross-over mallet techniques in the piece "Dancing Snowflakes". 3rd Grades are taking on improvisation. While 4th grades will be learning the connection between a song from Ghana and the old standard "L'il Liza Jane". While our 5th graders are working with the story of "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and learning about the underground railroad. In 4th Grade violin we are starting our 3rd piece, "Song of the Wind". Band is working on page 11, #'s 38 - 40. And 3rd grade recorder club is playing "Para Ti".

For our after school performing groups this means we are getting closer to hitting the stage. I've already begun combining Woodwinds and Percussion after school on Tuesday's. And this week we've even added a few trumpet players to the mix. Starting at the beginning of March Band will move to 2 days a week, combining all the Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion. This is necessary to rehearse performance pieces. Violins will also move to two practices a week starting in March, but will be meeting on Monday's and Wednesday's. I'll be sending home a flyer with students next week spelling out the new rehearsal schedule.

Both the 3rd and 4th graders are working on the tongue twister Peter Piper. While 3rd grades are working hard to play the piece, the 4th graders are wrapping their heads around transposing the song into 3 different keys. Band students this week are playing pages 9 & 10 in their books. Violins will be working out the last 2 variations of Twinkle, Twinkle. I'll be seeing Recorder Club on Thursday morning and the wonderful Boomin Beats will meet for the second time this Friday after school. In Tech classes the 5th graders are animating a scene from their Explorer's lives, while 4th graders are putting a together a short animation on the current wacky Portland weather.

Violins are working on their 3rd variation of Twinkle, Twinkle. The "I'm Happy" or variation B. Remember 10 -15 minutes of daily practice is best. Students in Tech this week are working on an animation project. While we are breaking out the xylophones during our general music classes.

I hope everyone had a restful but fun filled winter break. It feels good to back at Lewis. This week I announced to 4th and 5th grades that the Boomin' Beats will be starting next Friday, January 13th. I passed out a flyer with the following info about this performance group. "The Boomin Beats is a performance group that emphasizes singing, playing, dancing and even drama. Students are expected to actively participate in all aspects of the group, which means everyone sings, dances, plays and acts. The Beats are a dynamic group that takes what we do in classroom music to a performance level. The Boomin’ Beats are an after school group and will be meeting Fridays from 3:00 - 4:00 PM." You can sign up on my website at: http://1314.posterous.com/

For those students in Band or Strings practicing an instrument over the break can be challenging, especially if you break involves traveling. I'm advising students not to take their instruments on road trips, but if they are staying home over the time spent practicing will be well worth it. Many students are just figuring out how to play their instruments. Daily practice is the best way to keep the momentum. Even just 10 minutes a day can make a big difference. I've tried to provide instruction, music, and theory drill on my website. Visit it a couple of time over break to stay connected and motivated. Again, have a wonderful break and we'll see you in the new year. You can get to my website at: http://1314.posterous.com
